Helena Swift is a Nevermoorian teenager, the oldest child of Dave and Catriona Swift and older sister of Homer, Hawthorne, and Davina Swift. As of Winter of Two, Third Age of Aristocrats, Helena is finishing her fifth year at the Gorgonhowl College of Radical Meteorology.

Biography

Little is known at this time of Helena's life prior to studying at Gorgonhowl College. She was born into the Swift family and grew up as the older sister to two younger brothers, Homer and Hawthorne. She eventually left Nevermoor to study at Gorgonhowl College of Radical Meteorology (a school on a tiny island) in the Sixth Pocket of the Free State. Because the school is situated in the eye of a perpetual cyclone, Helena rarely makes it home for various events.

It is likely that after she began studying at Gorgonhowl College, her younger sister Davina was born. During Winter of Two, Third Age of Aristocrats, Helena was able to make it home her family for the Christmas holidays.

Etymology

Helena is a Latin form of the name Helen. Helen is an English form of the Greek name Ἑλένη (Helene)—from ἑλένη (helene)—meaning "torch" or "corposant." It is also possible the name comes from the Greek "moon" σελήνη (selene).

Swift comes from the English surname, originally a nickname for a swift/fast runner from the Old English swift "swift, fleet, quick." It also can be from an Irish surname that is the Anglicized form of Ó Fuada "descendant of Fuada." Fuada is derived from fuadach which means "wind-blown, pulsating, plundering."
