"Trust me, we don't want to stay with boring old Homer. He's gone to find his boring old friends so they can be boring and old together."
Hawthorne's opinion of his brother[src]

Homer Swift is a Nevermoorian teenager, the oldest son of Dave and Catriona Swift, younger brother of Helena Swift, and older brother of Hawthorne and Davina Swift. As of Wundersmith, Homer is a fourth year student at the Conservatory of Thought and has taken a vow of silence during his years of study. He is only allowed to speak one day per year and therefore carries chalk and a blackboard around his neck in order to communicate with others.

Biography[]

This section requires expansion.

Not much is known about Homer's life prior to meeting Morrigan. He was probably born in Nevermoor, and was the Swift family's second child after Helena. When he was around three years old, his brother Hawthorne was born, followed a few years later by his sister Davina. Around the age of eleven, he enrolled as a student at the Conservatory of Thought. Because of this, he has taken a vow to only speak one day a year for the duration of his studies.

Physical Appearance[]

Homer is described as tall, sturdy, and fair-haired, taking after his father Dave; the only difference in their appearance seems to be Homer's lack of a beard. He is noted as wearing a pair of thick glasses.

Personality and Traits[]

Homer seems to have a sarcastic personality, and communicates this sarcasm with his blackboard. He seems to show some embarrassment about his family, and also has dedication to using the blackboard to communicate. He cannot directly talk (except one day per year) due to being a student of the Conservation of Thought.

Etymology[]

Homer is the anglicized Ancient Greek name ‘Ομηρος (Homeros) which means "hostage, pledge."[1] This is fitting as Homer (in the book series) has taken a pledge (or vow) of silence and is, in a sense, kept hostage to that vow.

Swift comes from the English surname, originally a nickname for a swift/fast runner from the Old English swift "swift, fleet, quick." It also can be from an Irish surname that is the Anglicized form of Ó Fuada "descendant of Fuada." Fuada is derived from fuadach which means "wind-blown, pulsating, plundering."[2] Notable people with this surname include Jonathan Swift (essayist/satirist) and Taylor Swift (country and pop music star).

Trivia and Behind-the-Scenes[]

  • As of Wundersmith: out of all of Hawthorne's siblings, Homer is the one mentioned the most often
